SPAN 427: Latin American Women Writers
Description: Taught in Spanish, the course focuses on reading and analyzing works from Latin American women writers. Examines fiction by and about women from varied sociocultural backgrounds to discover the diversity and the commonality of female experience in different geographical regions. Students examine the narrative strategies employed by these writers in interpreting social, political, cultural, and religious forces that create gender, class, and ethnic barriers in Latin American society.
Reflective Narrative
This course fulfilled MLO 3, literary and cultural knowledge. This class was my favorite literature class, it was in this class where I became inspired to do my Capstone project in literature. It was not the first literature class I took, but it was the most impacting. In this class we focused on women Latin American writers. I was introduced to very important novels and their controversial authors; I say controversial because during their time when they published their novels, society was not ready for them. Most of the authors that I read are women who spoke out about the role of women in society, men from different countries did not accept the point of view of such authors. It was very interesting to learn how a woman perceived the world during a certain time in history and how she was perceived by society. In this course, I also learned how the United States has influenced Latin America because it is reflected in the writing of these women authors. I read approximately 6 novels and a few short stories, each and one of them gave me a taste of history through the eyes of a woman. Two of the authors that impacted me the most were Angeles Mastretta and Elena Poniatowska, in whom I based my Capstone project. Both authors depict a woman who is not ordinary, that is why they caused controversy. I had to write an analysis of each novel and short story, with this I showed my understanding of it. Learning to analyzed a novel was not easy, but as a future teacher I would like to teach my students how to dissect a text. In the novels, I learned about different places in Latin America that I would like to visit some day. I will continue my education on literature.
