MLO 4: Secondary Cultural Knowledge
In addition to the Spanish language and Hispanic cultures, the student demonstrates a general knowledge of a socio-cultural group other than a Hispanic one or mainstream American culture. The student develops a basic understanding of the ways of thinking (ideas, beliefs, attitudes, values, philosophies), the behavioral practices (patterns of social interactions) and the cultural products – both tangible and intangible (for example, art, history, literature, music) – of the second culture.

HCOM 346: African American Life and History
In this class I acquired a better understanding of the history and life of African Americans. History of Africa before the slave trade with the New World was exposed in this course. I was astonished by how similar the life of blacks and native Americans is. Their history is not only affected them, but also the whole world. Africans were not just brought to the United States, but all Latin America. The same way that all the Latin American countries acquired their freedom from the European countries, the African Americans fought to get their human rights from the U.S. Many centuries had to passed for blacks to be treated as humans, the same way happened to the campesinos throughout Latin America. In this course all types of African American art was observed. I knew little about how important the artists from the 1900's were, now I can appreciate their contribution.
