HCOM 346: African American Life and History
Description: An introduction to the historical and cultural narratives that shape African American identities and experiences. Offers built-in assessment in HCOM MLO 7 or the concentrations in Africana Studies; Comparative American Studies; or History, Oral History, and New Media
Reflective Narrative
This course fulfilled MLO 4, secondary cultural knowledge. I was not aware of how much impact the African culture has in the United States, until I took this course. It is important to learn from other cultures, not just our own because that helps us understand each other. In the course, we read autobiographies that helped me see and understand what Africans and African Americans have gone through. Thanks to those writings, I was able to compare and contrast the history of Latin America and black slaves, that was one of the things I enjoyed the most from this class. The course was taught in chronological order, starting from the beginning until the present. The professor began by teaching us how life was in Africa before the arrival of the Europeans, so I got to learn about the different empires and their contributions to the world. So from the empires, we slowly moved all the way to the present. During this course I had to do a presentation about one of the novels that was assigned, The Anti-Lynching Campaign of Ida B. Wells. I was amazed to learn how much this woman did for the African-American community. In my presentation I included her contributions to this country and how she was able to receive support from other important countries, such as England. Her anti-lynching campaign was very controversial here in the United States and also in other parts of the world. At the end of the semester I had to do a chronology which showed my understanding of African and African-American's history. As a future teacher, I understand how essential it is for me to have an understanding of other cultures. This course helped me understand the African-Americans' struggles, which are the struggles of many immigrants and minorities in this country.
