SPAN 306: Culture and Civilization Civilization Spanish Latin American
Description: Taught in Spanish, presents an historical and cultural overview of Hispanic Latin America from its pre-Columbian origins to the present through works of literature, art, music, and videos. Taught in Spanish.
Reflective Narrative
This course helped me fulfilled MLO 3, literary and cultural knowledge. This has been one of my favorite classes because I got to learn about all Latin America through different sources. The professor began the class by teaching us about the pre-Columbian origins from different part of America. We learned about the ancient civilizations, not about all of them, but just the more well known. We studied the civilizations from Peru and Mexico. I was fascinating to learn how advanced these civilizations were and how much they contributed to form our present. The class was structured in chronological order, so we started with ancient civilizations and moved to present time. I learned about the political structure of Latin American governments and how they have affected society. I learned about the independence movements of several countries and also their revolutions. It was difficult to memorized the names of all the most important leaders of each country, but I tried to memorized the ones that forever will be known, the dictators. As the professors said, we cannot talk about the history of Latin America without talking about the United States. Through this course I learned more about the involvement of this country and how its ambitious decisions have affected Latin Americans for centuries. Since we studied LatinAmerica through art, music and literature, for my final project I decided to focused on literature. It was very interesting to learn from other sources, but I really enjoy literature, so I gave a presentation on one of the novels I was reading at that time, Hasta no verte, Jesus mio. In the class we learned about the revolutions in different countries, as I mentioned before, but the Mexican Revolution got me very interested. The novel in which I based my final project for the class talks about the role of women during the Revolution, so it was very interesting to learn that part of history through a woman's perspective. In the near future I want to continue studying about the history and cultures of Latin America. It is my goal to teach at least for a year in a Latin American country, to expand my knowledge.
